American Colonial
& Chippendale
In the mid 1700s, an English
cabinet maker, Thomas Chippendale,
refined the Queen Anne style of furniture even further. Being
influenced
himself by the Gothic craze that was sweeping England as well
as the
Rococco style from France, he combined elements from both into
his own distinctive style.
This style soon took on his name. One of the distinguishing characteristics
was the use of large decorative "plate" style hardware,
an important
element in the piece's overall design.
